is the Executive Director of the Eritrean Law Society (ELS), and member of the Council of the Barcelona-based International Criminal Bar (ICB). A specialist of international human rights law and a former Judge of the Central Provincial Court in Eritrea, he is also co-author of The African Garrison State: Human Rights and Political Development in Eritrea (James Currey, 2014), which made it to the prestigious annual list of “Outstanding Academic Titles” of 2015, bestowed by the American Library Association (ALA), the oldest and the largest library association in the world. He comes with a cumulative work experience of nearly 20 years in human rights teaching, research, advocacy and adjudication. He obtained is doctoral degree (LLD) in Public International Law from the University of the Free State in 2008. Having successfully completed four post-doctoral fellowships in Belgium, Germany, Holland and Ireland, he recently finalised a 2-year fellowship as a Guest Writer at the “Writers in Exile Program” of the Swiss-German PEN Centre in Luzern, Switzerland.
He has contributed academic works in edited volumes published by world-class publishing houses, such as Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Springer, and T.C.M. Asser, including academic articles published by a wide rage of peer-reviewed scientific journals, such as the Australian Indigenous Law Review, Journal of International Humanitarian Legal Studies, Interdisciplinary Journal of Human Rights Law, Journal for Juridical Science, Journal of African Law, African Human Rights Law Journal, Review of African Political Economy, African Conflict and Peacebuilding Review, African Journal on Conflict Resolution, and the Yearbook of the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs. His opinion and interviews have been widely featured by a multitude of media outlets, such as Al-Jazeera, BBC, Boston’s NPR News, International Business Times, Klassekampen, IRIN News, New Europe, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Neue Luzerner Zeitung, Radio France International, Russia Today, Swiss Radio and Television, The Guardian, Tages-Anzeiger, Tribune de Genève, and others.
